Notes About the New Page Format

On May 1, 1999, we changed our page format. Here's a list of problems we know about:

No navigation links in the footer.
On the first day of the new format, several readers wrote in to tell us that removing the navigation buttons from the page footers was a mistake. On May 4, we put them back.
Wide pages.
Some pages are too wide for the current format and require horizontal scrolling to read. Wide pages have one of the following causes:
  • Wide images: We've addressed this problem temporarily by scaling images to be at most 460 pixels wide. To view the image at its natural size, you can click the picture. The long term fix is to redo all wide images to be 460 pixels or less naturally.
  • Wide code snippets: We need to fix these by hand, choosing where to break lines.
  • Wide tables: We need to fix these by hand.
To report a wide page, send us mail with "wide page" in the subject. Please include the URL for the page.
